It was over a year in the making, and I didn’t tell anyone about it for a really long time, mostly because it felt like a dream. I’m the kind of person who likes to wait until things are official and have actually happened before I get excited and tell the world about it. I shared it on my Instagram account around November last year when the house was almost finished, and I’m sharing the photos of our finished home for the first time here on the blog.
As my mother was moving in with us, I searched the internet for plans that included a granny flat. While my mum and I will be technically living together, she will have her own unit and be free to live her own life. That was something that was really important to us, because we still wanted to have our own privacy as well.
We managed to find a plan that made us all happy quite easily, and then have it adjusted slightly by the building company we decided to go with. Not only does the plan include a granny flat, but it also had open plan living for the living room, dining room and kitchen. I have always lived in homes that had the kitchen separate to the dining and living room and I’ve always hated it. Every time we entertained guests for a dinner party I would find myself in the kitchen, and miss out on spending much time with our guests.
We had the house SOUND PROOFED
With mum moving into a unit that is attached to the house, we had a concern that any noise we would make would disturb her. Our solution for that was to have the adjoining walls installed with soundproofing. That has not only served to keep our noise from annoying mum, but it’s also been an extra bonus in eliminating street noise. The entire street we have moved into is under construction, and because we were one of the first homes finished, it means that on a daily basis there are earth movers using road mats, and other heavy machinery that I don’t know the names of preparing the other lots for building. With the sound proofing and the plan having our living areas at the back of the house, we don’t hear ANY of the noise from the other builds. I think in the 7 months we have lived here, the only sound that bothered me was a jackhammer right next door, and I don’t think anything could drown that out!
My Favourite Features
My favourite feature in the entire house is the gorgeous wood flooring (and yes it is real). I love those floors. I have wanted wood floors for as long as I can even remember, and now I finally have them. My other favourite thing about the new house is the lighting. I have always lived in dark homes with small windows, I really wanted the house to feel open and FREE. So we had lots of large windows installed to let in all that gorgeous light. At the moment, it’s Winter here in Australia and all those gorgeous windows let the sun in every morning and it warms up the house enough to not need the heater on. Bonus on so many levels.
I can’t wait to show you all the house once I have finished decorating. For now the house is fairly “furniture bare”. I made the decision to sell off all our old furniture and decor items before we moved in and slowly I have been buying in new stuff. The house is still a work in progress, I’m trying to go with the idea that you should only bring things into your home that are so beautiful, or they make you so happy that you have to buy them.
What do you think?
